Trivia Night - Sake On-nomi #39

Event Summary:

In Sake On-nomi #39, we challenged our participants to a round of trivia night! Drink sake, answer trivia and learn something along the way!

Brave participants that took part in this event stood a chance to win the limited edition, award winning Hideyoshi Daiginjo Genshu Matsuemon (worth $128).

As we had a industry friend join our event, we have decided the extend the prize sake to the 2nd place as well.

Hosting it on Kahoot means that the fastest + most accurate finger wins the quiz. There are 5 pit-stops where we would pause the quiz to taste the sakes chosen for the night.

Do the questions get easier as you drink? Absolutely not. Good luck!

Here were some of the interesting and tricky questions:

Answer: Sudo Honke Sake Brewery is almost 900 years old! Founded in 1141 and run by the 55th generation of the Sudo family, it is the oldest sake brewery in Japan.

Answer: Because of the unique process of using Koji to make sake, sake is the only alcohol with significant amount of umami.

Answer: Nada grows 25% of the Yamadanishiki in Japan, also known as the King of sake rice. It's an impressive feat for a GI the size of the Jurong. It is called "Nada-gogo" because Nada's sake breweries/factories are divided into five villages: Nishi-gō, Mikage-gō, Uozaki-gō, Nishinomiya-gō, Imazu-gō.

The other options are very close answers and here's why -
i) Nara is the birthplace of sake
ii) Niigata ranks 1st on most amount of PREMIUM sake, but 3rd in overall sake made
iii) Kyoto ranks 2nd on both premium and overall sakes made

Answer: Iwai is a sake rice grown in Kyoto. It is suitable for sake making, but it has a low yield at 34kg per acre, making it expensive to use. Its characteristics synergises well with the famous Fushimizu water, resulting in soft velvety sakes.

Check out our 2 of our sakes made with Iwai rice here:
-Tsuki no Katsura Junmai Daiginjo "Heian-Kyo"

Answer: Definitely not Dewanosato rice haha! "Dewa" here stands for Dewasansan rice, which is now considered the perfect sake rice to make Junmai Ginjo sake with its good umami and large shinpaku. "33" is another cheeky name for "sansan" , or mountain, as seen in the logo.

Answer: Omachi rice grains are prone to cracking as it is a pure-strain heirloom rice. In fact, omachi rice is the granddaddy of all sakamai.

Despite being incredibly hard to brew with omachi, Gozenshu has managed to brew a top quality sake at 40% polishing ratio. Check it out here:

Answer: Did you know that most sakamai are cross-strains?
i) Yamadanishiki (Yamadaho x Tankan Wataribune)
ii) Gohyaku Mangoku (Kikusui X Shin-200-go)
iii) Gin No Yume (Yamadanishiki X Hinohikari)

Answer: A masu (枡 ("square") or 升 ("measure") was originally a square wooden box used to measure rice in Japan during the feudal period. It is around 180ml, hence, most sakes are bottled at 720ml. We do not recommend drinking from a masu as the corners can trap bacteria, making it not the most hygenic drinkware.

Don't have proper drinkwares for sake? We got you covered, check out our sake cups and glasses here

Last but not least, the Killer Question of the night:

Answer: Kamanoo is a heirloom rice that has similar status to omachi. Here are the rice of the flavour profiles mentioned.

  • Rich, dry, citrusy, earthy, umami Kamenoo
  • Fragrant, fruity, elegant, and complex = Yamadanishiki
  • Aromatic, earthy, mellow, rich, and complex = Omachi
  • High umami, clean and crisp, dry = Oseto
